Bush's Phony Summit

Tomorrow and Thursday the White House has its "Conference on the Economy" with all the circumspection and objectivity of a homecoming rally. The Washington Post has the agenda. The guest list is so one-sided you would think it was put together by CNN or CBS (what, you thought I was going to say Fox?).

The Social Security panel is especially interesting, not least because this is where the White House is making its biggest push. The panel is first thing in the morning on Thursday, the perfect time to maximize news coverage, and it is one of only two the president is scheduled to attend. [Correction: I had written it is the only one, but he is also scheduled to attend the one on lawsuit abuse, that scourge of the economy.]

Josh Marshall has already made note of the decidedly pro-privatization tilt of the panel. He also pondered the presence of one Sandy Jaques, who heads the suddenly-authoritative group Women for a Sound Social Security Choice. She is connected with Citizens for a Sound Economy, aka Dick Armey's new job, and her bio has "political operative" written all over it.

Which is why it was especially interesting to read a New York Times story on the panel describe her participation this way:

To drive that point home this week, White House officials scheduled a single mother from Iowa, Sandy Jaques, to speak on the advantages that private accounts could offer to divorced spouses and widows.

Jaques is as representative of the views of single mothers as Dick Cheney is of college dropouts. But we shouldn't expect any different from a White House that cynically blurs the distinction between expert advice and political spin on everything from global warming to Social Security.

But don't think the White House isn't sensitive to these complaints. In the White House briefing, reported in Dan Froomkin's column, Scott McClellan defends the panels this way:

"The President has outlined six very clear proposals for strengthening our economy even more," McClellan said. "And he wants to talk about those. And he wants to talk about how we keep our economy growing. And this is an opportunity for him to sit down with people from across the business sector and other people to talk about ways that we can continue to strengthen our economy. It's a top priority for the President. . . .

"Q Can I ask one other thing about it. Is there any chance that there's going to be anybody speaking at these conferences who, for example, doesn't think private Social Security accounts are a good idea or doesn't think making the tax cuts permanent is a good idea?

"MR. McCLELLAN: Well, you're going to see the list of people that are participating in this, and I think it will resemble -- or that there will be a wide range of people from the business community participating in this."

Then McClellan explained what he meant by "wide range": "I think that generally speaking, there are going to be people there who are supportive of ways we can continue to move forward on these policies together to keep the economy growing stronger."

Oh, yes, the opinions expressed at these panels will range from A to B.

It's bad enough that the Administration keeps serving up these "canned" supporters of their policies as "poster children" for the given cause. What is so maddening is that the media blandly accepts them without ever doing even a cursory Google or Nexus search to find out who they really are. I sent a note to CBS News asking them if they could explain how John Roberts or his producer happened to "find" Tad DeHaven, whom Roberts referred to as a "Poster Child" for Social Security reform. In an interview, DeHaven said he is 28, and has no expectations of ever seeing any benefits from Social Security because it will collapse. He is a big booster of private accounts. Roberts report did indicate in a title slide that DeHaven was associated with the National Taxpayers Union, but neglected to also report that NTU and the other operations which DeHaven had previously worked for including the Cato Institute, were all strong supporters of the Bush plan for SS privatization....a little fact which MIGHT have caused viewers of the report to look at DeHaven's statemens in a slightly different light.

Please tell me what their flat tax proposals and the abolition of social security have to do with the economy since this is supposed to be about the economy but is really about their pet agenda-- oh the economy of the 1%, I see
The people who are discussing this really disgust me. All ceo's and political operatives. I am a caseworker and have seen hundreds if not thousands of people on social security- retired, survivors and disabled- none of these people have any idea what this means or whose lives it will affect. Ideological greedy pricks.
And yes it will be disaster for women. I guess you better start liking your mom ,gr mom and aunt because they will all come live with you when there is no social security.

I can predict that unless CBS News has radically changed their policies you'll never hear back from them about their "plant in the street" interview with DeHaven.

Why? Because that's just how CBS does stuff. It's how they run this scam each time they trot it out.

This episode so far is a reasonable facsimile of Mika Brzezinski's CBS News interview with Dennis Cariello, taped for their "On The Issues" segment on taxes during the run-up to the Republican National Convention in NYC. Cariello, not otherwise identified, gave a nice soundbite in which he was thrilled to death with the Bush tax cuts.

Turned out he was
* President of the New York Young Republicans Club
* And formerly Treasurer of the New York Young Republicans Club
* And formerly General Counsel of the New York Young Republicans Club
* And formerly Treasurer of the Society of Republican Citizens
* And the gent whose smiling face greeted all visitors to the "GOP Live" page of the 2004 Republican National Convention website

A party exec and an up-and-comer; I expect he'll be a candidate for office in NY State sometime soon.

Somehow all that escaped Brzezinski and her producer. An oversight. It got included in some other CBS piece later on, still without any identification of Cariello.

Over a week after the story first ran, CBS quietly added a note to the web version to ID Cariello. Very little, very late.

I wrote to several different folks associated with the story, as well as to the generic "contact us" address, five or six times over a two-week period, with specific (and polite) questions about how they happened to run across this particular fellow. I know others did as well. If they wrote back to anyone, I never heard of it.

Does anyone besides me remember when Lily Tomlin did her send-up of Ma Bell (at the time, the ONLY phone company; that's how old I am) under the slogan "WE DON'T CARE. WE DON'T HAVE TO."?

That's CBS. Plant-in-the-street interviews are as good as it gets these days; it goes downhill from there.

If I was starting a group that met the needs of so many average Americans, I would probably make it fairly easy to join. After all, the new group would need the support, right? My guess is that an average person couldn't join one of these pro-private Social Security groups, even if they wanted to. Fake groups...Hollywood. Maybe Don Lapere or Carlton Sheets will speak up for the President too. Only $19.95
