We're only two weeks into the reshuffling, and a pattern is already obvious: If you aren't a close personal friend of the president, you needn't wait for the phone call. Let's start a running tally, shall we? Here are the first three cabinet appointments for the new term:
- For Attorney General, Alberto Gonzalez, White House counsel and longtime Bush confidant.
- For Secretary of State, Condi Rice, National Security Advisor and secret wife of the president.
- For Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, top White House domestic policy advisor and another longtime Bush confidante.
This on top of the purges at the CIA to force out intelligence officers disloyal to the president.
